Kolkata has always known good food. The city's markets carry Himsagar and Langra when they arrive in June, but Alphonso — the GI-tagged Hapus from Ratnagiri and Devgad — peaks earlier, from March to May, and rarely reaches Bengal's wet markets in honest condition. Ordering directly from source is the only way to get it right.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is subtle but real — and our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers across India shows north India leans Ratnagiri, while Kolkata buyers who've tried both often come back for Devgad the following season.

Grade matters too. A Jumbo (275–300 g) fruit from either origin is a different eating experience from a Small (150–180 g). If you're buying for gifting, Jumbo or Extra Large (250–275 g) presents better and ships with less relative packaging overhead per fruit.

Delivery to Kolkata

Hapus Aam delivered to Kolkata — Alphonso mango online Kolkata

Fruit leaves our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point within 48–72 hours of harvest. It travels by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse — about 10–12 hours — where it rests on a hay bed for 24–48 hours to reach 70–80% ripeness. Then it dispatches to Kolkata by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, depending on your pin code. Transit to Kolkata is typically 1–3 days.

The fruit arrives firm enough to handle but already blushing with ripeness. Leave it at room temperature for about two to three days and it will be fully ripe. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes — chilling before ripeness kills the aroma and dulls the sweetness permanently.

If any mango arrives damaged, photograph it and contact us within 24 hours of delivery. We replace 100% of damaged fruit with photo evidence.

We do not sell fresh Alphonso mango July to January. That is honest. No Hapus exists in good form during those months, and we will not substitute a different variety and call it Alphonso.

What the box looks like when it arrives

Each box is 5-ply corrugated fibreboard, 130 gsm, courier-grade, with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit doesn't. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) that prevents the lenticels — the small pores on an Alphonso's skin — from bruising against their neighbours. Six air holes on the top and bottom of the box let the hay-bed ripening continue in transit without moisture build-up. The box comes in 3.5 kg and 4 kg sizes.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select your mango and grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) from the product pages above. Pick Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo based on how you plan to eat or gift them.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart. Box sizes are half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. Choose what suits your household or the occasion. Corporate and HoReCa orders of 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg) and above can be placed directly through the site.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch. We ship to 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Most Kolkata pin codes receive delivery within 1–3 days of dispatch.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Every fruit on this site is sourced from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Konkan, Maharashtra. In Devgad taluka alone, we work with orchards in Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav and 19 other villages. In Ratnagiri taluka, fruit comes from Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya, Kalbadevi and nine other villages. Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, selects orchards based on Brix consistency, tree age (most are 12–25 years old) and alternate-bearing management — not just price.

Harvesting is done by hand using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For taller trees, an indigenously developed pole with a camera lets harvesters spot the fruit before cutting. Each mango is harvested at the right maturity stage, not before.

After harvest, every fruit is weighed, graded by size and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machines that check for internal defects — including spongy tissue — and external surface damage before packing. A mango that fails this scan does not go into your box.

Independently tested by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284), report 01/ETHAP2500044 dated 5 April 2025: all 28 pesticide residues tested were within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We do not claim "pesticide-free" — one residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg — but we can say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits.

Ripening: What "Natural" Actually Means

Carbide-ripened mangoes are the default in most wholesale chains reaching eastern India. Calcium carbide generates acetylene gas, which mimics ethylene and forces colour change without developing the sugars or aromatics that make Alphonso worth eating. The skin turns yellow. The inside stays fibrous and flavourless.

At our Mumbai packhouse, fruit rests on hay — the traditional Aadi method — for 24–48 hours in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no gas of any kind. The hay creates a micro-environment that allows natural ethylene released by the fruit itself to accumulate gently. The Brix rises. The fibre softens correctly. The saffron-yellow colour develops from the inside out, not the outside in.

We also apply a controlled hot-water treatment after harvest to reduce surface fungal issues and extend shelf life — a practice standard in export-grade handling. Post-harvest cooling at the packhouse follows before the air-conditioned truck departs for Mumbai.

Season and Availability for Kolkata Buyers

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with the peak between March and May. Kolkata's heat and humidity in April and May are actually well-suited to enjoying Alphonso — the fruit is at its densest sweetness then and the contrast with cold lassi or ice cream works particularly well.

By late June, the Konkan orchards are done. We stop selling fresh Alphonso at that point. Year-round, we carry Alphonso mango pulp and Aamras for those who want the flavour outside the season — but the fresh fruit itself is not available July to January, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Ratnagiri won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level recognition, not an award to this brand, but confirmation that Ratnagiri Alphonso is the national benchmark.

People Also Ask

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri or Devgad is sold by the box, not by the kilogram, because individual-kilo retail damages the fruit through handling. On AlphonsoMango.in, boxes run ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 depending on origin, grade and quantity — roughly ₹350 to ₹600 per fruit for Jumbo grade.

For Kolkata delivery, a 1-dozen box of Ratnagiri Alphonso starts at ₹1,849 and ships within 1–3 days of dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

Which mango is famous in Kolkata?

Kolkata is most closely associated with Himsagar and Langra, both Bengali varieties that arrive in June. Alphonso — the GI-tagged Hapus from Ratnagiri and Devgad in Konkan — peaks earlier, from March to May, and rarely reaches Kolkata's wet markets in honest condition, which is why serious buyers order it directly from source.

Among customers who have ordered both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso, Kolkata buyers tend to reorder Devgad the following season, likely for its richer, deeper sweetness.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

GI-tagged Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad in Konkan, Maharashtra, is widely regarded as the best in India. Both carry GI No. 139. Devgad Alphonso, sourced from sea-facing orchards 12–25 years old in Sindhudurg, typically hits the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range at full ripeness and is the one most often reordered.

Grade matters as much as origin — a Jumbo fruit (275–300 g) from either Ratnagiri or Devgad is a noticeably different eating experience from a Small (150–180 g) from the same tree.
